Best practice for management of pipeline integrity by pigging in complex environments

Overview

Corrosion of oil and gas pipelines can result in serious environmental, health and safety hazards if the integrity of a pipeline or riser system is compromised. Corrosion inhibition regimes and pipeline inspection are both critical in determining the condition and fitness for purpose of pipelines. In mature oil and gas regions such as the North Sea, ILI is becoming increasingly important in verifying the status of ageing pipelines and allowing their operational lives to be extended. In newer regions with more corrosive fluids, ILI allows operators to assess the efficacy of their pipeline management systems.

This webinar will detail the purposes of pipeline pigging during both commissioning and production operations, outlining the different threats to pipelines that pigging can mitigate. It will also discuss the design aspects of a piggable pipeline system.

The technologies behind ILI tools will be covered, including the principles of operation and defect detection, advantages and disadvantages of both magnetic flux leakage and ultrasonic ILI tools. Guidance will be given on how to select appropriate technology.

Learning objectives

  • Why use ILI – overview of threats to pipelines and how ILI can extend the operational life of assets.
  • How are pipelines pigged – assessment of pipeline piggability and types of pigging tools.
  • Principles of pipeline inspection by magnetic flux leakage ILI tools.
  • Methodologies of pipeline inspection by ultrasonic inspection ILI tools.

Speakers

Paul Otway, Head of Pigging at Jee Ltd

Paul has extensive experience in subsea pipeline design and integrity projects for global operators. His particular focus is the management of pipeline ILI campaigns including technical definition of pigging campaigns, pig selection/design, review and HAZOP of procedures and offshore management of pigging operations. Paul won the Subsea UK Young Emerging Talent award in 2013 for his ILI work.
