FEED

Front-end engineering design i.e. basic engineering

Field

A geographical area under which an oil and gas reservoir lies

Flexible flowline

Flexible pipe laid on the seabed for the transportation of the production or injection fluids. It generally links to a structure or to a production facility. Its length ranges from a few hundred meters to several kilometers

Flexible riser

Riser constructed with flexible pipe (see riser)

Flow assurance

This expression includes all issues important to maintaining the flow of oil and gas from the reservoir to the processing facilities

Hazard identification

HAZOP

Hazard and operating assessment

HP/HT

High pressure / high temperature

HSE

Health and safety executive (UK) / Health safety and environment

ILI

In-line inspection; a method to assess the integrity of a pipeline. ILI tools are built to travel inside a pipeline and collect data as they go to help detect anomalies

IM

Integrity management

IMR

Inspection and maintenance routine

J-lay

Installation method with a vertical tower that gives a J-shape to the pipeline during the laying operation

J-tube

A conduit that has the shape of the letter 'J' that is attached to the platform. A J-tube consists of the following components; vertical tube, bottom bend and bell mouth

L-tube

A conduit that has the shape of the letter 'L' that is attached to the platform

Late life

With an increasing number of mature oil and gas fields and ageing assets, late life engineering looks to extend the life of a pipeline system or decommission assets which are no longer required

LTE

Lifetime extension

MAHP

Major accident hazard pipelines

MAOP

Maximum allowable operating pressure

MAPD

Major accident prevention document
