- Jee was asked by a North Sea Operator to assess the condition of bypass pipework within a North Sea concrete leg platform. This involved firstly reviewing the integrity status, key risks and required minimum wall thickness of the bypass pipework, including consideration of COP dates. Secondly, a planned future inspection scope was to be reviewed and recommendations of additional inspection requirements identified. Thirdly, options for life extension of the bypass pipework in question based on possible inspection outcomes, including provision of indicative costs, was to be carried out.
- The project was conducted in close collaboration with a number of external parties that have been involved over the life of the asset. Available data was gathered and reviewed by Jee’s engineers, highlighting problematic areas to which particular attention was to be paid. Wall thickness requirement calculations then allowed conclusions about the current integrity of the pipework to be generated. Further, methods of improving the bypass pipework integrity were researched by liaison with a range of vendors, and a short-list of suitable and recommended options created that included the use of novel technologies such as Micro ROVs and specialist welding techniques within the confines of the platform leg. Replacement options were also investigated, should inspection findings deem this necessary.
- This study benefited the client in that it generated a clear summary of significant amounts of data collected over the lifetime of the assets, easing internal resource pressures. Further, it gave confirmation that the scope of a planned future inspection was sufficient, while highlighting the importance of management of change. Jee was also able to provide detailed guidance into integrity improvement options, drawing on the extensive experience of its engineering team and through investigation of novel technologies.
