The objectives of the project were to assess the upheaval buckling propensity of a pipe-in-pipe system (8”NB CS production flowline + 12”NB CS carrier) and determine the mitigating measures that could be used. The system operates at a temperature of 109°C and a pressure of 305bar.
Finite element analysis was used to model the pipe-in-pipe buckling characteristics and the non-linear behaviour of the flowline was captured in the process.
The client found the geotechnical experience and expertise of Jee very useful and the predictions made were validated in the field almost immediately.
